I could care less where a digipeater is beyond its LOCAL area! If I want to look into South Carolina just overlay the DIGIS.POS file. In DOS, just hit MAPS-OVERLAY-DIGIS! I DO agree that a digi should show its presence and that it is alive frequently to is OWN LOCAL users, Beyond that, it should be in the DIGIS.POS file. It also needs to show it self to the surrounding area at a rate proportional to driving time between areas. I recommend something like: 1) Once to Jeff Brenton where it is incorporated into DIGIS.POS for ALL 2) Every 10 min DIRECT 3) Every 30 Min VIA TRACE,TRACE or VIA TRACE2-2 ... and if you must... 4) Every 60 min via TRACE,TRACE,TRACE,TRACE or VIA TRACE4-4 Local conditions may vary. EVERYONE PLEASE: 1) do a MAPS-PLOTS-DIGI or whatever the command is in your version of APRS and confirm that YOUR loca digis are plotted in DIGIS.POS 2) Check out the path of your digis and be sure they are considerate of others... Path usage is regional in nature, so there is no one answer for all. I had not actually looked at paths in over a year or so, and was shocked to see the number of WIDE6-6's here in the mid-atlantic area where we have digis every 30 miles and almost as many IGates. For other DOS users, you can instantly check these paths out. 1) Go to the Digi-Path page 2) hit JUST-WIDE6 And you will get a list of all calls that are using WIDE6 in their path. etc... THE AMAZING THING is that we dont have a WIDEn-N network! Only 13 out of the 50 digis I can see from Baltimore are WIDEn... I think this tells us that people are sticking in WIDE6-6 because they see it on other peoples paths and are just using it without thinking... Remember, most of the APRS people on the air now were not with us back before the smart digis when WIDE,WIDE was the absolutely longest path possible without on-air melt-down due to DUPES. Again, WIDE6-6 may be appropriate in your area, but in general it may not be elsewhere... To work as designed, everyone must be able to see all packets from everyone and each person must set up his path to hit the "common" area. Here is a SAMPLE worksheet that roughly applies to the topology we have here in *Maryland*. Your area will vary greatly based on terrain & population density... TYPE TYPE DESIGN OPTIMUM | ON 144.39 WE SEE OF OF # OF # of USERS/RATE | ACTUAL ACTUAL EVENT RANGE DIGIS HOPS Movng Fixed | USERS RELIABILITY ------ ------ ---------- ---- ----- ------ | ------ ----------- Local 2 mi Direct 0 40 @1 or 60 @10 | 2 Outstanding Local 8 mi one central 1 20 @1 or 30 @10 | 10 Excellent County 16 mi 1 TALL digi 2 20 @2 or 30 @20 | 30 Good Region 64 mi Many talls 3 15 @3 or 20 @30 | 120 Marginal State 128 Mi Many Many 4 8 @3 or 10 @30 | 480 Poor NOTE: With the "OPTIMUM" number of users shown above, the network stays below the ALOHA optimum of about 18% channel loading and *everyone* (even the state level system) sees GOOD RELIABLE APRS communications. BUT!: With "normal" everyday APRS activity on 144.39, you can only get good results over about 2 hops before QRM begins to drastically cut down on reliability. 99% OF THE TIME: most of us use APRS in the POOR Category for FUN! But that is *not what it is designed to do* and no one should plan on it that way unless they can tolerate the lack of reliability over greater areas. IGATES: Notice, however, that we can still go to more and more IGates, and expect WORLDWIDE GOOD communications as long as there is an IGate within each local net. THis way, two communicating stations are still only 2 RF hops apart anywhere on the planet! CONCLUSION: We must be careful to not try to use APRS in applications where it cannot work well... But conversly, it will work far better than you actually see on the air, if you operate your "SEPCIAL EVENT" at thee optimum rates and somehow avoid the QRM coming from out of area... de WB4APR, Bob > > After my conversation with Scott, I see no reason to abandon traditional > > packet and will continue to promote both [it and APRS] in Missouri. > > I agree. I have devoted most of my APRS/CE energy to getting a native Pocket PC version to work. (Hey, I have a new iPaq, and wanted a native version to play with myself. ;-) Getting the code tweaked for Pocket PC (3.0), without breaking 2.0, 2.01, and 2.11 machines has been a challenge. The Pocket PC OS is nice and stable, but sometimes you have to do a serious amount of mining in the developer documentation to find what you are looking for. The good thing about getting the Pocket PC conversion and build process working correctly is that newer versions with more bug fixes and added features will be able to be built in a relatively short amount of time. I have eliminated the "unknown quantity" problems that are always present with a new OS. Please download this new version when you can, and let me know if I've managed to break any of the existing platforms. (I wish I could own an example of *every* platform, but my last name isn't Rockefeller. ;-) Thanks for all of your positive feedback, continued interest and support. The 19th Annual ARRL and TAPR Digital Communications Conference will be held September 22-24, 2000, in Orlando, Florida - just minutes from the Orlando International Airport. The ARRL and TAPR Digital Communications Conference is an international forum for radio amateurs in digital communications, networking, and related technologies to meet, publish their work, and present new ideas and techniques for discussion. Presenters and attendees will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn about recent hardware and software advances, theories, experimental results, and practical applications. The Digital Communications Conference is not just for the digital expert, but also for digitally oriented amateurs of all levels of experience. A Conference for the Beginner as well The conference is not just for the digital expert. As in years past an entire session strand with beginning, intermediate, and advanced presentations on selected topics in digital communications will be offered. Some of the topics will include: APRS, Satellite Communications, TCP/IP, Digital Radio, Spread Spectrum and other introductory topics. Come to the conference and hear these topics presented by the experts! Area Attractions The Orlando Florida area is famous for its attractions and vacation spots. Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World (just to name a few) are within 15 minutes of the hotel. Shuttle service from the hotel will be available for a small fee. Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach are a 30 minute drive East of the hotel. Symposia, Seminars and Banquet Two symposia/seminars will be held which allow those with additional time and interest to make the most of the Conference. For those who may have interest in just one symposium or seminar, registration for the conference is not required to attend these activities. This allows maximum flexibility for those who may want to participate during the Digital Communications Conference, but do not have an entire weekend to devote to the event. The Fourth APRS National Symposium will be held on Friday and will be moderated by Steve Dimse, K4HG (the developer of javAPRS). It will likely include many APRS software authors, such as Bob Bruninga, WB4APR (the father ofAPRS), Keith Sproul, WU2Z, Mark Sproul, KB2ICI (the developers of MacAPRS and WinAPRS), Brent Hildebrand, KH2Z (the developer of APRSPLUS), Mike Musick, N0QBF (developer of PocketAPRS), and other nationally known APRS leaders. Join this group for the afternoon and evening for in-depth discussions and presentations on the current and future status of APRS. This is a unique opportunity to gain insight into this fast-growing digital aspect of amateur operations that combines computers, packet radio, and GPS (Global Positioning System). On Saturday night the DCC Banquet will be held. A guest speaker will speak after the banquet and a prize drawing will top the evening. The Grand Prize is a Palm VII Personal Digital Assistant and Synergy Systems LLC has donated two M12 development kits and many more. The Sunday morning seminar will be focused on PIC development, design, and programming.
