Welcome to the TAPR AO16 APRS(r) Mail List

APRS, an acronym for Automatic Packet Reporting System, is an integration
of hardware and software that allows you to automatically track moving
objects (such as vehicles, people, and weather) in real time using maps
displayed on your computer monitor.

The hardware side of APRS requires an Amateur Radio station, a packet
radio TNC, and a computer to run the APRS software. For accurate APRS
operation, many APRS stations also include a Global Positioning System
(GPS) receiver in their station.

The software side requires a version of APRS that is compatible with your
computer. Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, the father of APRS, wrote the first
version of APRS for DOS. Later, Keith and Mark Sproul, WU2Z and KB2ICI,
wrote Macintosh (MacAPRS) and Windows (WinAPRS) versions. More recently,
Steve Dimse, K4HG, has written software (javAPRS and APRServe) that is
intended to interlink all APRS operations via the Internet.

The purpose of the AO16 APRS list is to provide a forum for folks
interested
in discussing APRS and topics related to AO16 operations.

The AO16 APRS list has a few simple rules:

1) Stick to the subject (APRS). That means no virus alerts, no chocolate
chip cookie recipes, no surplus gear fire sales, no nothing that isn't
    directly related to APRS.

2) No abusive behavior demonstrated towards a list member will be
tolerated on the ao16aprs. Please take your flames elsewhere.

3) I reserve the right to unsubscribe any list member who violates these
rules without warning. That means one strike and you're out of here.

The chairperson of the AO16 APRS list is:

Just so that you have all the commands neatly contained in one place,
here is just about everything you will need to know. Note that this list
is running on a Lyris server. Please be aware that the commands might be

cases, the default server address is: <lyris@lists.tapr.org>. Other

3. CHANGING YOUR SETTINGS/ADDRESS VIA THE WEB INTERFACE: To do this, go
to <http://www.tapr.org/cgi-bin/lyris.pl> and click the link in the
"Change Your Settings" section. You'll need to enter your e-mail
address and password (if you chose one) to continue.

(If you've forgotten your password, you can type in your e-mail address
in the field at the bottom of the page and click "Get password" to
request Lyris to e-mail your password to you.)

At the following page, you can read messages, post a message, adjust
your settings, or unsubscribe. From the settings page, you can change
your status (MAIL, DIGEST, INDEX, or NOMAIL), choose whether or not to
see your own messages, and choose whether or not you want to receive a
separate acknowledgement via e-mail when one of your messages is posted
to the list, You can also change your e-mail address if you need to.
When you change your settings, make sure you click the "Save" button at
   the bottom of the page.

4. ARCHIVES: The ao16aprs SIG archives are available on the Web, at the
   following URL: <http://www.tapr.org/sigf.html>

5. BOUNCED MAIL: One of the key features of Lyris is its ability to handle
mail bounces transparently to the list owner; as such, bounced mail
will be handled primarily by the Lyris list server.

6. POSTS/REPLIES FROM DIGEST USERS: You *must* change the Subject: line
when replying to a digest; all posts with "ao16aprs DIGEST" in the
Subject: line will be rejected by the server (you will receive a
   "rejection letter" when this happens).
