There is a hardware and software difference.. The A Version has a filter optimized for the upper part of 70cm while the E Version is optimized for 430-440 MHz Software: With the E version no Sky command is possible, 70 cm rep shift is -7.6 or +1.6. There are some more minor differences.. Although you can make an A version out of the E version and vice versa with the configuration diodes or bridges in the trx. The filter for the 70 cm you cant change...not easily The A (G) Version has more APRS possibilities then the E Version. Look at the Kenwood page for the G Upgrade Sheet. 73 de Tom AL0L HB9DOD al0l@arrl.net Tel +49 1 9844920 Fax +49 1 9844921 --- You are currently subscribed to htaprs as: lyris.htaprs@tapr.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to leave-htaprs-845T@lists.tapr.org Questions regarding the SIG go to the SIG administrator: wa1lou@tapr.org From bounce-htaprs-845@lists.tapr.org Sun Apr 1 12:39:49 2001 Received: from lists.tapr.org (lists.tapr.org [204.17.217.24]) by tapr.org (8.9.3/8.9.3/1.13) with SMTP id MAA09323 for ; Sun, 1 Apr 2001 12:39:49 -0500 (CDT) Message-Id: X-Sender: preed@dnaco.net Date: Sun, 01 Apr 2001 12:10:20 -0400 To: "TAPR Hot Technology APRS" From: Phil Reed Subject: [htaprs] TH-D7A(G) and satellites In-Reply-To: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed List-Unsubscribe: List-Software: Lyris Server version 3.0 List-Subscribe: List-Owner: X-List-Host: Tucson Amateur Packet Radio X-Message-Id: <4.3.2.7.2.20010401120755.00a813d0@dnaco.net> Sender: bounce-htaprs-845@lists.tapr.org Precedence: bulk Is there a primer online someplace on how to use the TH-D7A(G) (voice or data, standalone or connected to a PC) to work satellites? Join the amsat-bb mailing list. LOTS of folks on there who know the birds inside and out. Send a subscribe message to majordomo@amsat.org. 2.) Here are some of my pointers: * The TH-D7A has full duplex capability. You can listen on one band and talk on the other. That's what the "DUP" button is for. This is perfect for voice satellite work. To really use it, you'll need headphones. Another thing you'll need to make your life easier is a small tape recorder. If you can record the Qs it will be much easier for you to do many things: not have to log the Qs while pointing the antenna and holding the radio, listen to your operating technique, etc. I have an Aiwa unit that I bought from BestBuy. It has a belt clip so it clips on your belt. I put it on record before the pass starts, but pause it. When the bird comes up and I have a good copy, I turn the pause off and away I go. Now for the most important part: LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN. The biggest mistake people make is failing to listen on the birds. They talk and talk and that causes all sorts of QRM. UO-14 and AO-27 are FM birds. Only one person can talk at a time. IF YOU DON'T HEAR THE BIRD DO NOT TRANSMIT!!! This is a major problem and people need to realize that they could get into the bird but be on the wrong downlink frequency on their radio, etc. Then they call and call and call and ruin it for everyone else. If you hear the bird, transmit. If you get through, you will hear yourself in the downlink. Don't just call CQ Satellite. Don't just throw out your call. FM birds are different than anything else. If you hear someone you want to work, CALL THEM. Give their call and then yours. Don't worry about waiting for the frequency to be clear. It won't happen. Just call and if you capture the satellite, you're doing well. It may take multiple tries for you and the other station to successfully work, but keep at it. Give your name and grid square only. Keep the Qs short. It is of no use to want to rag chew on an FM bird. Pretend you are in a contest. Some good calls to look for: KK5DO - Bruce is an excellent sat op. KK5YY - Jerry is probably one of the most experienced ops out there on the FM birds. He also goes to very odd and rare grid squares. K6YK - John is always a good guy to talk to as well. VE6EGN - Egon always seems to be on and always has a good signal. If you try to work any of these guys when you hear them, you should have good luck. The Arrow antenna is harder to use than it looks. It gets VERY heavy holding at arms length for 20 minutes. So be prepared for that. It's good exercise. These birds are all 2m up, 432 down. You'll need to adjust the doppler occasionally on the downlink only. Uplink you don't need to adjust. I would recommend listening to a couple passes and getting used to tracking with your arrow and hearing how the QSOs work on the birds. Then when you are more comfortable, make your call. Nothing is worse than having someone answer you and then you lose the bird because you made a tracking error! There, I hope these help you guys! 73, Jon NA9D on 4/1/01 3:28 PM, RASNM@aol.com at RASNM@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 4/1/01 11:41:17 AM Mountain Daylight Time, preed@dnaco.net > writes: > > << Is there a primer online someplace on how to use the TH-D7A(G) (voice or > data, standalone or connected to a PC) to work satellites? >> > > Phil, > > There is a good article on voice and UO-14 in the Aug 2000 issue of QST, I > have done this with my arrow. Although the assumption is that the RIG is sitting on a DX cluster frequency, there is nothing that prevents it from sitting on an APRS frequency as well. APPLICATION: APRS supports the DX spot format, but we call it the "APRS RESOURCE" format since we can use it to send any TEXT information to the DX LIST in the D700 and D7. In fact, APRSdata uses it all the time for sending out the SATELLITE PREDICTIONS to everyone with a D7 or D700. FUTURE: We had also proposed using this as a means of QSYing a radio for any of a number of special applications. For example: 1) A 30min beacon that auto-qsy's Travelers in a new area to an "APRS" interesting channel 2) Future Automatic Voice Relay System (Cell phone concept) 3) Special events and hig-vis applications.. Is there just one radio involved here? Is the D700/D7 working in APRS mode or Packet, or neither. What do you expect the pic to do; switch the data channel or the voice channel to the new frequency? If it is the data channel that is switched, does the radio stay at the new frequency, or does it revert to the APRS frequency after a timeout? If the radio is in APRS mode, I don't think the D700/D7 sends the packet data out the serial port. Maybe there is a way to enable this? Many of the settings as well as messages and lists can be summoned out the serial port while the radio is in APRS mode, but DX doesn't appear to be available data. Hello,
The website mentioned below seems to = also=20 indicate that a serial RS 232 connection is also = available.

Hi all,

I just posted this to the GPS list = and I=20 thought I would do the same here.  Hopefully it will be of use = to=20 some.

I don't know if many have heard of Holux but they have = a new=20 GPS out with a single USB cable on it. I use a GPS in the car for = amateur=20 radio APRS and for use with mapping programs like Street Atlas. My = laptop is=20 running Windows 2000 pro.

I used to have one of the Pharos = GPS units=20 and although I liked the small size I didn't like all the cables = that I had=20 to deal with. This new GPS gets power over the USB cable, so it's a = single=20 cable right to the laptop (that is if you have a USB port on the = laptop).=20 It's a much cleaner setup now.

The GPS itself is the size of = a mouse.=20 In fact, it looks like they used the same injection molds from some = computer=20 mouse product. The GPS has a magnetic base if you want to put it on = your car=20 roof but I just put it on the dash. Oh, it also has indicator LEDs = which let=20 you know what is going on with the unit, a nice feature IMHO. Their=20 documentation is a little sparse but it was quite easy to load the = drivers=20 and get going with it.

I found their web site = here:

http://www.holux.com.tw/english2/p3.htm

Also, the guy in the US = that I=20 got this from is: Alan Kuo gps_ak@excellcomputer.com

I have = no=20 affiliation with them, just a happy customer.

If you are = interested,=20 I would contact Alan directly.

Best regards,
Dave=20

I was wondering if anyone has written a SATGATE program for LINUX using the D700 that would change frequencies, kepler offset TNC speeds, bands etc, in repsonse to satellite passages overhead. I am talking about receive only at the moment. What I was thinking is that it would be cute to have this radio sitting on the internet here at home, changing frequencies whenever a sat went overhead. Additionally, it would be even better if one station world wide could coordinte the whole thing, such that I would not have to keep the kep's updated. I suppose that this is a general need software, where a scanner such as a R-7000 could be controlled too... The question is, has this been done? If not, are there any volenteers that would like to work on it... I have a dual band antenna here, as well as a spare D700 that can be placed onto the net. I decided to upgrade to a GPS that had mapping capability. I was looking at the Street Pilot and eMap series about 6 months ago but did not like buying external memory and the battery life of the Street Pilot is bad. I looked at the Garmin web site and liked the new entries in the eTrex line. After searching around the local area I found a Vista for $349.95 at Eastern Mountain Sports (the last one, the display model). I wanted the 24 megs of memory for maps. The unit comes with a data cable only (no external power). I noticed someone mentioning GPS City having them for $300 but I did not want to wait 8->. I did find that some CompUSA stores are carrying the combo data/ power cable for 39.99 which is about what GPS City sells them for. I picked up a cable this evening at a local CompUSA. The unit is smaller than a 12XL and has the advantage of nearly lying flat with the data cable connected (Alot better than the 12XL). The unit can accept NMEA waypoints from the D700A. In fact it can use the 9 character setting instead of the 5 character setting I used for the 12XL. APRS stations are nicely displayed on a reasonably detailed base map. The base map seems to be as detailed as, for example, the Boston and Vicinity map on a Massachusetts roadmap. It has the major highways and the major roads in a city. The higher resolution display makes for nice text fonts and map display. They tend to use a graphical menu system with 'shortcut' buttons for page and find on the left and right sides of the unit. There are also zoom in and out buttons on the left side. Alot of the navigation of the menus is done with a joystick on top. I have some problems with it as I find it is easy to press down on it and make a selection accidentally. One interesting feature is WAAS. It is in the testing phase. WAAS is a FAA sponsored project for differential GPS corrections. It is on the same frequency as GPS signals but is broadcasted from a Geosynchronous Satellite. The receiver uses one of the GPS channels to receive it and the satellite numbers are above 32. The WAAS signal seems to be more sensitive to blockage. One interesting aspect of WAAS is it is designed to work anywhere in the Continental US (and nearby areas of Canada and Mexico) as compared to DGPS by the Coast Guard only being good within 60 miles or so of the reference station. I am getting 11 to 14 foot errors most of the time with occasional 9 foot errors. The compass and the altimeter is great. It even has a graphical moon phase indicator in addition to the sunrise/sunset calculator. So far it works great. I have not tried it yet on my D7A(G). I have not used the MapSource software for more detailed maps. 73 Eric eac@shore.net --- You are currently subscribed to htaprs as: lyris.htaprs@tapr.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to leave-htaprs-845T@lists.tapr.org Questions regarding the SIG go to the SIG administrator: wa1lou@tapr.org From bounce-htaprs-845@lists.tapr.org Thu Apr 19 02:30:44 2001 Received: from lists.tapr.org (lists.tapr.org [204.17.217.24]) by tapr.org (8.9.3/8.9.3/1.13) with SMTP id CAA10359 for ; Thu, 19 Apr 2001 02:30:41 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: From: "Don Wilbanks, KC5MFA" To: "TAPR Hot Technology APRS" References: Subject: [htaprs] Re: htaprs digest: April 18, 2001 Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 02:29:33 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4522.1200 List-Unsubscribe: List-Software: Lyris Server version 3.0 List-Subscribe: List-Owner: X-List-Host: Tucson Amateur Packet Radio X-Message-Id: <001e01c0c8a2$7b506f60$b6d81542@oemcomputer> Sender: bounce-htaprs-845@lists.tapr.org Precedence: bulk I had mine updated at Dayton last year to the G. I sent out a version of this question last week, but received no replies. I've expanded the distribution list and sent it out again. I'm working on an APRS TNC, and need some help finding test software. Sometime in the recent past, I saw a reference to a packet viewer, but I lost the link. If I remember, the software takes a raw ax.25 packet, and reformats it for display. I think it understands mic-e format. I hope to be working with packet data pretty soon. This software would come in real handy to help troubleshoot and test my software. Does anyone remember what it is? Also, I'll need some software to test my KISS mode drivers. Something that sends and receives KISS packets is all I need. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'll probably need this before the packet viewer, since the kiss driver doesn't know anything about ax.25 message formats. Perhaps you aren't near an IGate machine. Other settings in your 'path' could prevent you from reaching an IGate machine. Do you show up on anyone's map in your area? Can you go to someone's base station and, standing out in their yard, be seen on their map? I tested out my HT by borrowing a laptop and running WinAPRS. Here are some settings to make sure you have set as shown so that the rest makes sense. menu name value ---- --------- --------- 2-F BEEP MINE 2-C DATA TX AUTO 2-B PACKET PATH RELAY,WIDE3-3 2-2 GPS UNIT NMEA 2-P TX DELAY 500ms 2-N PACKET SPEED 1200bps 2-M DATA BAND A 2-1 MY CALLSIGN W8AII Now, if you have these set as initial values, you should be able to do the following. 1 Set the A band (top band) to the APRS freq of 144.390. 2 Make sure the A band is simplex transmit, it should be by default. 3 Put the TNC in APRS mode so that it just says 'TNC' on the top line of the display, and not 'TNC packet'. 4 Look at the top line right of the 'TNC' indicator and if BCON is not there, push the BCON button once. If the BCON indicator is on, push the BCON button twice to turn. Step 4 will cause a posit packet to be transmitted, you should see the A band transmit indicator turn red, and then off. If you are digipeated, you should here a high to low tone transition for each digipeat that occurs. The display should also flash 'MY POSITION'. Other than this, look over the APRS configuration information in your manual and make sure there is not something else that you or I missed in the above basic settings. Ohh, also make sure that the battery saver is turned off under the RADIO-SAVE menu structure. This is not unreasonable if Xon-Xoff is used, but I can't get the TH-D7 to respond to the Xon character, usually Q. The only way I have been able to clear this out is to turn the radio off, then on again. Does anyone know if there is an Xon character that the TH-D7 reponds to? Why this concern over Xon-Xoff? It seems that Windows ME ( at least on some computers ) sends an Xoff character just before it opens a COM port, even if the COM port is not configured for Xon-Xoff. This turns off the TH-D7's serial data and leaves it unable to upload and download commands. The TNC seems unaffected, however. Anyone else have this problem, and, if so, does anybody have a solution? As long as you have a G variant there should be no problems. Non-G TH-D7's depend on the firmware in your eMap. 73, Mark KC7BXS --- You are currently subscribed to htaprs as: lyris.htaprs@tapr.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to leave-htaprs-845T@lists.tapr.org Questions regarding the SIG go to the SIG administrator: wa1lou@tapr.org From bounce-htaprs-845@lists.tapr.org Mon Apr 30 19:10:21 2001 Received: from lists.tapr.org (lists.tapr.org [204.17.217.24]) by tapr.org (8.9.3/8.9.3/1.13) with SMTP id TAA16877 for ; Mon, 30 Apr 2001 19:10:09 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: From: "John Sullivan" To: "TAPR Hot Technology APRS" Cc: "TAPR Hot Technology APRS" References: Subject: [htaprs] Re: Aprs on bicycle.
